MORENA AND CUBANA were waiting for me outside with Lil Chino from the Spanish Lords. We got in his van and drove toward the Spanish Lords’ ’hood on Western Avenue and Potomac Street. We arrived just in time to see a little commotion on Potomac. On the way there we had been drinking, so by the time we arrived I was beginning to feel the effects. I got out of the van and realized that the commotion was between the Lords and the Cobras. Papo saw us, walked over, and told us what was happening. He said that the Cobras had come by the neighborhood representing and spray painting the walls. My reaction was to ask for a gun. “We have to kill one of them pussies for what they did,” I said. Papo got a gun and we walked toward the Cobras. The Cobras didn’t notice us coming. Papo hid in the alley between Artesian and Campbell Streets. I kept walking straight toward them. The Cobras noticed me but hesitated to come after me. I continued to taunt them until they thought I was by myself. Finally they came at me. When Papo saw me run past him he jumped out of the alley and opened fire on the Cobras. Two Cobras were shot. I could hear screams of pain as I ran back to the safety of the Lords’ ’hood. I heard them shout “We’re gonna get you, you motherfucker!”
I got in the van. Papo headed in a different direction. Lil Chino drove me, Morena, and Cubana by Maria’s apartment. They dropped me off and headed for Kedzie and Armitage. Lil Chino was wary that the Cobras might have seen me get into his van. He wanted to put the van in a garage just in case the police came looking for it. I went upstairs, but there was nobody in Maria’s place. I had to let myself in through the back porch window. Maria always left that window unlocked for me.
About two hours later, Papo arrived with Lil Chino and Morena. I was relieved to see them, especially since they brought beer and weed with them. I felt edgy. I knew getting high would calm me down. We began getting high while we laughed about how the two Cobras were crying out and screaming in pain. Lil Chino, Papo, and Morena took turns complimenting me on my craziness. They said I was a real down brother. “He has to be,” Morena said. “That’s Lil Loco from the Almighty Latin Kings.” I felt indestructible, proud, like a real tough guy. After all, I was Lil Loco, a Latin King, down for my nation and proud of it.
I was informed that one of the guys that got shot was a Latin Disciple so we should be expecting retaliation from them. The Latin Disciples were a pretty big gang, more to be reckoned with than the Cobras. An all-out gang war was inevitable; we just didn’t know it. That night we heard gunshots echo in the air.
